The Island Problem

Imagine a world where every country had its own telephone system but none of them could call each other. Citizens of France could talk to other French people, Germans could call other Germans, but a French person could never call Germany. Each system works perfectly on its own, but they exist in complete isolation. This is essentially the situation with blockchains. Bitcoin has its own network. Ethereum has its own network. Solana, Avalanche, Polkadot, BNB Smart Chain, Cosmos, and hundreds of others each operate independently. Your Bitcoin cannot directly interact with an Ethereum smart contract. Your Ether cannot natively move to Solana. Your USDC on Arbitrum cannot directly settle a transaction on Polygon. This isolation is not a design flaw — it is a fundamental characteristic of how blockchains work. Each chain maintains its own ledger, its own rules, and its own consensus mechanism. There is no built-in way for one blockchain to verify what happened on another. But as the crypto ecosystem grew from a handful of chains to dozens of meaningful ones, that isolation went from a curiosity to a real cost. Bridges are the response. This lesson explains why bridges exist, what problem they solve, and why the multichain world we now live in makes them unavoidable infrastructure rather than optional plumbing.

Key terms

Cross-chain
Referring to interactions, transfers, or communications that occur between two or more different blockchain networks.
Bridge
A protocol that connects two or more blockchains, enabling the transfer of assets or data between them.
Multichain ecosystem
The current reality in crypto where many specialized blockchains coexist, each with its own users, applications, and liquidity, requiring bridges or interoperability protocols to communicate.
Liquidity fragmentation
The problem of assets being spread across many separate blockchains, reducing the depth and efficiency of trading on any individual chain.
Wrapped token
A token on one blockchain that represents an asset locked on another blockchain, typically maintaining a 1:1 value peg with the original asset.
Interoperability
The ability of different blockchain networks to communicate, share data, and transfer value with each other.
Canonical bridge
A bridge operated by a chain's own development team, typically the most trusted way to move assets onto and off that chain (e.g., Polygon PoS bridge, Arbitrum bridge, Base bridge).
CCTP (Circle Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol)
Circle's native USDC transfer protocol launched April 26, 2023 using burn-and-mint mechanics. Has facilitated 2M+ transfers and $37B+ cumulative volume; CCTP V2 (2025) added Fast Transfer and Hooks.
IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication)
The native interoperability protocol for the Cosmos ecosystem, connecting 85+ chains with ~$4B 30-day volume, light-client based, with Ethereum support added in 2025.
