Path 2: a centralized exchange (CEX) — withdraw to chain A, deposit to the exchange (potentially via a different chain or fiat), withdraw back out to chain B. CEX paths add KYC, withdrawal limits, and intermediary risk, but for many real-world transfers they are cheaper, simpler, and even safer than bridges. Most crypto education treats this as a non-question — "use the bridge." Real users move money both ways constantly, and the optimal choice changes per route, per amount, per urgency. Practical choice between a self-custodial cross-chain bridge or a centralized exchange to move assets between chains. Optimal answer depends on amount, chain pair, custody preference, urgency, and KYC status.
Withdrawal limit
Daily or per-transaction limit imposed by a CEX. Coinbase verified-tier limits commonly $25K-$10M/day; Binance default 100 BTC/24h with full KYC. For amounts above ~$50K, often forces use of a bridge.

Period during a transfer when assets are not in your wallet. Bridges minimize this (typically minutes); CEX paths involve a brief exchange-custody window. For users avoiding exchange custody on principle, this matters.
Round-tripping
Anti-pattern: bridging chain A → chain B and back to chain A within days. Wastes fees on both legs. Often indicates the underlying need could be solved by a different strategy (lending protocol, perp DEX) without moving the asset twice.
Native vs canonical asset
Native asset (e.g., native USDC issued by Circle on a chain) vs canonical wrapped version (e.g., USDC.e bridged from Ethereum). Native is usually preferred — better liquidity, no bridge custody risk, official issuance.
