- Interoperability stack
- The layered set of protocols that move data and value across chains in 2026: messaging-protocol layer (LayerZero V2, Chainlink CCIP, Cosmos IBC, Wormhole) at the bottom, asset-specific protocols (Circle CCTP) and application-layer bridges (Stargate, Across, Hop, Synapse) in the middle, and intent-based and ZK-proven bridges as the emerging top layer.
- LayerZero V2
- Generalized cross-chain messaging protocol launched in 2024, supporting 160+ chains as of 2026. Uses configurable Decentralized Verifier Networks (DVNs) chosen per-application. Stargate V2 (its flagship bridge) spans 16 chains with the Hydra liquidity insurance system; combined ecosystem volume sits in the $70-75 billion range.
- Chainlink CCIP
- Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol from Chainlink. Mainnet Early Access July 2023, GA April 2024. Supports 60+ networks; powers $14T+ in onchain transaction value. Uses dual-network design: OCR consensus among DON nodes plus an independent Risk Management Network. Adopted by Coinbase as the sole bridge for $7B in wrapped tokens on Base in December 2025.
- Cosmos IBC Attestor framework
- A 2026 framework that extends IBC light-client verification to chains whose architecture cannot run a Tendermint-style light client directly, using a multi-sig verification layer. Enables IBC reach to Solana and EVM rollups beyond the original Cosmos zone set.
- CCTP V2 Fast Transfer
- A 2025 CCTP V2 feature where pre-funded liquidity providers front the destination-chain USDC against an in-flight Circle attestation, completing transfers in seconds rather than minutes.
- CCTP V2 Hooks
- A 2025 CCTP V2 feature that lets the destination-chain USDC mint trigger an arbitrary smart-contract call atomically, collapsing bridge-then-act flows into a single transaction.
- Risk Management Network
- Chainlink CCIP's independent secondary verifier committee, separate from the primary Decentralized Oracle Network. Monitors all CCIP messages and can block them on anomaly detection. Shares no nodes, no code, and no trust assumptions with the OCR network — an attacker would need to compromise both independently.
- Hydra liquidity insurance
- Stargate V2's pooled liquidity backstop system that provides shortfall coverage across LayerZero ecosystem chains, complementing the Stargate prefunded-pool bridge model.
- Intent-based bridge
- A bridge architecture where users specify desired outcomes (asset, destination chain, recipient, deadline) and a network of competing relayers fills the order using their own capital, with cryptographic or economic verification settling the cross-chain accounting after the fact. Across (UMA optimistic oracle) is the canonical production example.
- ZK light client bridge
- A bridge that uses zero-knowledge proofs to cryptographically prove source-chain events on the destination chain, with proof verification in milliseconds even though the underlying state being proven involves millions of transactions. Polyhedra zkLightClient and Succinct deployments are notable production examples covering 25+ chains.
- Optimism Superchain
- The OP Stack rollup ecosystem (Base, World Chain, Mode, Ink, Unichain, Zora, opBNB, and Optimism itself) that shares a security model and increasingly shares native cross-rollup transfer infrastructure, reducing the need for external bridges between member chains.
- Native L2-to-L2 bridging
- Cross-rollup transfer infrastructure within an L2 ecosystem (Optimism Superchain, Polygon AggLayer) that does not introduce new trust assumptions beyond the underlying L1 security. Typically faster and structurally safer than routing through an external bridge for transfers between member chains.
