Beyond "Get Into Crypto"
Generic advice to "get into crypto" is not very useful. The industry is a heterogeneous collection of specialties, each with its own skill stack, training path, compensation range, and labor market dynamics. A smart contract developer's career looks nothing like a DAO contributor's career, which looks nothing like a security auditor's career, which looks nothing like a DeFi analyst's career.
This lesson maps the specific paths. For each one, the goal is to clarify three things: what the day-to-day work actually involves, what skills and credentials matter for entry, and what compensation looks like in 2025-2026.
The latest comprehensive salary data is reported by Dragonfly's annual Crypto Salary Report and the Algorand Foundation's developer-survey work. **The 2024 average global crypto salary was approximately $146,250 per Algorand and $144,000 per Dragonfly** — the latter being a roughly 18 percent year-over-year decline as the bear-market portion of 2024 squeezed compensation across the industry. **Senior DeFi engineers in major hubs continue to command $200,000-300,000+ in base compensation** plus token allocations, with the most-senior roles at top-tier protocols paying significantly more.
Funding context matters too. **a16z Crypto is raising its fifth fund at approximately $2 billion**, on top of the firm's existing $9.5 billion in crypto AUM. **Paradigm is raising its third fund at approximately $1.5 billion**. The major crypto VCs continue to deploy capital aggressively, which directly drives demand for crypto talent across all roles.
The best perspective is realistic: crypto is a real industry with real career paths, real compensation, and real labor markets. The romance of "anyone can become a successful crypto entrepreneur overnight" should be discounted heavily; the actual career progressions look much more like other industries than the marketing suggests.
