Foundational Knowledge Everyone Needs

Regardless of what role you pursue in crypto, certain foundational knowledge is expected. People who have only surface-level familiarity tend to struggle, while people who have built genuine understanding of how the industry works find opportunities much more easily. **Blockchain mechanics**: Understanding how blockchains actually work — how blocks are produced, how consensus mechanisms differ (proof of work vs. proof of stake), what makes Layer 1s different from Layer 2s, why finality matters, what mempools are and how they're cleared. You don't need to be able to implement these from scratch, but you do need to be conversant. **Cryptography basics**: Understanding what hashing does, why public/private key pairs work, what digital signatures prove, and how Merkle trees enable efficient verification. Again, deep cryptographic expertise isn't required for most roles, but you should understand what these concepts do well enough to discuss them. **Token economics and incentive design**: Why does a particular token have value? What does the supply schedule look like? Who holds it, and what unlocks are coming? Crypto's value is fundamentally tied to incentive structures, and understanding how they work — and how they fail — is essential. **Major projects and their differences**: You should be able to articulate why Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana exist for different reasons; why Layer 2s like Arbitrum, Base, and zkSync emerged; what makes Cosmos and Polkadot architecturally different from Ethereum; and what the major DeFi protocols (Uniswap, Aave, Compound, MakerDAO) actually do. **Security awareness**: Understanding common attack vectors (reentrancy, flash loan exploits, oracle manipulation, signature replay), why audits matter, and why even audited code can still have bugs. Even if you're not a security professional, this awareness affects how you work. **Regulatory landscape**: Having a general view of how different jurisdictions approach crypto. The EU's MiCA framework, US enforcement patterns, the post-Trump-administration shift toward crypto-friendly policies, Asian regulatory diversity. You don't need to be a compliance expert, but you need to know that compliance matters. **Market awareness without market obsession**: Following major price movements, knowing the rough sizes of major protocols and tokens, understanding what's currently trending. But this is different from being a degen who watches charts all day. Most crypto professionals develop a healthy distance from short-term price action while staying informed about major trends. Web3 development stack
Modern JavaScript/TypeScript libraries for blockchain frontends: ethers.js (and viem), wagmi (React hooks), WalletConnect, The Graph. Many crypto product engineering roles are essentially "React developer with Web3 knowledge."
Dune Analytics
Dominant tool for blockchain SQL queries. Data analysts use Dune to query on-chain data and build dashboards. Strong career path for people who know SQL.
Zero-knowledge cryptography (ZK)
Advanced specialization with very small talent pool and premium pay. Skills include understanding circuits, proof systems (Groth16, Plonk, STARKs). Resources like 0xPARC and ZK Hack are starting points.
