RWA Tokenization and the Tokenized Treasury Era

A deep tour of the $30B tokenized real-world asset market, the BUIDL/BENJI/Ondo treasury wave, ETF expansion to SOL and XRP, and the global custody and stablecoin frameworks shaping 2026.

24 min · advanced · part of Institutional Crypto: The Big Money Arrives

The 5x Year That Reshaped Institutional Crypto

In about twelve months, the tokenized real-world asset market quintupled. DefiLlama recorded approximately $5.5 billion of on-chain RWAs at the start of 2025; by late April 2026 that figure stood at $30.2 billion, with tokenized U.S. Treasuries alone accounting for $5.5 to $5.8 billion of it. The growth was not spread evenly across products. A small set of institutional offerings — BlackRock BUIDL, Franklin Templeton BENJI, Ondo Finance OUSG and USDY, plus the JPMorgan Kinexys settlement platform — captured the lion's share of activity. Lesson 3 introduced tokenized RWAs as part of a broader sketch of where institutional crypto is heading. This lesson goes deeper. We walk product-by-product through the tokenized treasury market, follow JPMorgan's Kinexys platform into the Canton Network era, examine private-credit RWAs at Maple and Centrifuge, look at the second wave of crypto ETFs that began trading in late 2025 with Solana and XRP, compare today's leading institutional custodians on a default-risk basis, and survey the global stablecoin frameworks coming online in the United States, Hong Kong, and Singapore. By the end you should be able to read a press release about a "new tokenized fund" or "spot ETF approval" and immediately know which structural family it fits into.
