A Different Bet on Scaling

Bitcoin and Ethereum bet that the right architecture for global decentralized money is a deliberately constrained Layer 1 (with Layer 2s for scaling). Solana made a different bet: build a single chain that scales to millions of transactions per second through aggressive engineering, accepting the trade-offs that come with that approach. Solana was conceived by Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer who had spent years working on optimizing protocols for cellular networks. His insight, published in a November 2017 whitepaper, was that the bottleneck for blockchain throughput was not consensus per se but the lack of a shared notion of time. If you could give every validator a cryptographically verifiable clock, you could parallelize many of the steps that traditional blockchains do sequentially. Solana mainnet beta launched on March 16, 2020. As of 2026, it is the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization (after Bitcoin and Ethereum), the dominant chain for memecoin trading, the most-active chain by transaction count on most days, and the host of an ecosystem that has produced some of the most consumer-friendly crypto products. It has also experienced more major outages than any other top-tier chain, which is part of the trade-off.
