A Different Vision: Many Chains, Connected
Where Solana bets on one fast chain and Ethereum bets on a base chain plus rollups, Cosmos bets on a different architecture entirely: many sovereign chains, each optimized for its purpose, connected by a standardized protocol. The thesis is sometimes called "the Internet of Blockchains."
The Cosmos story begins with Jae Kwon, who started building the Tendermint consensus algorithm in 2014. Ethan Buchman joined as co-founder in 2015. The Cosmos whitepaper was published in 2016. The Cosmos Hub mainnet launched in March 2019, and the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC) launched in March 2021.
The philosophical claim: no single blockchain can be optimal for every use case. A DEX has different needs than a lending protocol, which has different needs than a privacy network. Rather than trying to fit everything onto one chain (or one chain plus L2s), Cosmos provides tools to build purpose-built chains and a standard for them to talk to each other.
As of 2026, the Cosmos ecosystem includes 115+ interconnected chains, $3.5B+ in 30-day cross-chain volume, and 1.5M monthly active users.

- Perpetual futures protocol that migrated from Ethereum L2 to dedicated Cosmos chain (Nov 2023). Decentralized in-memory orderbook on validators. Revenue to DYDX stakers.
- Stride (STRD)
- Liquid staking provider for Cosmos chains. Issues stATOM, stOSMO, stTIA. Uses Interchain Accounts (ICA / ICS-27).
- IBC Eureka
- Extension of IBC beyond Cosmos. Launched April 10, 2025 by Interchain Labs. Enables <$1 Ethereum-Cosmos transfers in seconds.
- App-chain thesis
- The argument that some apps benefit from their own chain rather than running as smart contracts. Provides performance, sovereignty, and value capture; costs include bootstrap and composability fragmentation.
