Key terms
- Cosmos
- Ecosystem of interoperable sovereign blockchains. Founded by Jae Kwon (Tendermint 2014); whitepaper 2016; Cosmos Hub mainnet March 2019; IBC March 2021.
- Tendermint / CometBFT
- BFT consensus algorithm. CometBFT is the successor to Tendermint Core (forked 2023). 1-6 second blocks, instant economic finality, ~10K TPS theoretical.
- Cosmos SDK
- Go framework for building application-specific blockchains. Modular architecture; 200+ production chains run on it.
- IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication)
- Standard protocol for transferring tokens, data, and messages between Cosmos chains. 115+ interconnected chains; ~$3.5B 30-day volume.
- Cosmos Hub (ATOM)
- The original Cosmos chain. Provides Interchain Security (leasing security to other chains). 12-15% APR staking; 61.4% staking ratio.
- Osmosis (OSMO)
- Dominant DEX hub for Cosmos. Concentrated liquidity, superfluid staking. Most IBC volume routes through Osmosis.
- Celestia (TIA)
- First modular data availability network. Mainnet October 31, 2023. Data availability sampling for light clients. 580K wallet airdrop.
- Berachain (BERA)
- EVM-compatible Cosmos chain. Mainnet February 6, 2025. Pioneered Proof of Liquidity consensus. $3.1B Boyco TVL.
- dYdX v4
- Perpetual futures protocol that migrated from Ethereum L2 to dedicated Cosmos chain (Nov 2023). Decentralized in-memory orderbook on validators. Revenue to DYDX stakers.
- Stride (STRD)
- Liquid staking provider for Cosmos chains. Issues stATOM, stOSMO, stTIA. Uses Interchain Accounts (ICA / ICS-27).
- IBC Eureka
- Extension of IBC beyond Cosmos. Launched April 10, 2025 by Interchain Labs. Enables <$1 Ethereum-Cosmos transfers in seconds.
- App-chain thesis
- The argument that some apps benefit from their own chain rather than running as smart contracts. Provides performance, sovereignty, and value capture; costs include bootstrap and composability fragmentation.
