Silk Road

Darknet marketplace operated by Ross Ulbricht (Feb 2011–Oct 2013). Accepted only Bitcoin. Processed ~$1.2B in transactions. FBI shutdown Oct 2, 2013; Ulbricht sentenced to life without parole (later commuted).

Cyprus banking crisis (March 2013)

EU bail-in of Cypriot banks. Triggered first "monetary panic" demand for Bitcoin. BTC rose from $40 to $260+ in weeks.

Litecoin (LTC)

First major Bitcoin altcoin, launched Oct 7, 2011 by Charlie Lee. Faster block times (2.5 min) and different mining algorithm (scrypt). "Silver to Bitcoin's gold."

Coinbase

US-based crypto exchange. Founded June 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam. Y Combinator backed. IPO'd April 2021. ~4,279 employees as of June 2025.

Mt. Gox collapse

Feb 28, 2014 bankruptcy filing of the largest Bitcoin exchange. ~850,000 BTC lost. Trustee repayments began July 2024; deadline extended to October 31, 2026.

Vitalik Buterin

Russian-Canadian programmer; co-founder of Ethereum (whitepaper Nov 2013, mainnet July 2015). Started Bitcoin Magazine at 17. Continues to drive Ethereum research.

Ethereum

Smart contract blockchain. Whitepaper Nov 2013; ICO July-Aug 2014 (raised 31,529 BTC ~$18.4M); mainnet (Frontier) July 30, 2015.

The DAO

Smart-contract venture fund launched April 30, 2016 on Ethereum. Raised $150M+ in 28-day sale (11,000 investors). Hacked June 17, 2016; reentrancy bug drained 3.6M ETH.

DAO hard fork

Ethereum hard fork on July 20, 2016 (block 1,920,000) that recovered stolen DAO funds. Minority that rejected the fork continued original chain as Ethereum Classic.

Ethereum Classic (ETC)

The original Ethereum chain after July 2016 hard fork. Held by community committed to "code is law." Persists today; ~$5B market cap vs Ethereum's $300B+ in 2026.

Bitfinex hack

Aug 2, 2016 multisig wallet compromise; ~119,756 BTC stolen (~$72M then). Bitfinex applied 36% haircut. Hackers (Lichtenstein/Morgan "Razzlekhan") arrested Feb 2022.

Lightning Network

Layer-2 payment channel network for Bitcoin. Whitepaper by Poon and Dryja, Nov 2015. Enables near-instant, near-free Bitcoin transactions. ~5,637 BTC capacity Dec 2025.
