2017: The ICO Mania
2017 was the year crypto entered mainstream culture. Bitcoin rose from $1,000 to a peak of $19,665 on December 17, 2017 — a roughly 20x year. But Bitcoin was overshadowed by an even larger phenomenon: the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) boom.
**Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs):** Throughout 2017, projects raised approximately $5.6 billion by selling new tokens directly to the public, bypassing traditional venture capital and securities regulation. Most ICOs were scams, vaporware, or doomed to fail. A few — Filecoin ($257M), Tezos ($232M), Bancor ($153M), EOS ($4.1B over its year-long sale starting June 2017) — became major projects.
**Stablecoin emergence:** Tether (USDT) had been around since 2014, but in 2017 its market cap finally crossed $1 billion as crypto traders sought a stable parking place between volatile trades. Tether's reserves were already controversial.
**Major events:**
• August 1, 2017: Bitcoin Cash hard fork at block 478,558. The "Big Block" faction split off from Bitcoin to create Bitcoin Cash with 8 MB blocks (vs Bitcoin's 1 MB at the time).
• August 2017: SegWit activated on Bitcoin (BIP-141), a significant scaling upgrade.
• September 4, 2017: China bans ICOs. Chinese exchanges close.
• June 23, 2017: CryptoPunks launched by Larva Labs (Matt Hall and John Watkinson) on Ethereum — 10,000 unique 24×24 pixel characters, originally distributed free. Pre-dated and inspired the ERC-721 standard.
• November 28, 2017: CryptoKitties launched by Dapper Labs/Axiom Zen, immediately congesting Ethereum (gas costs spiked). The first NFT-based "viral" application.
• November 19, 2017: Bitcoin first crosses $10,000.
• December 4, 2017: Coinbase tops the App Store, surpassing YouTube.
• December 17-18, 2017: Bitcoin peaks at $19,665 (CoinMarketCap close); some exchanges briefly showed $19,783 intraday.
**Adoption metrics 2017:**
• Bitcoin daily active addresses: averaged ~700,000, peaking ~1 million in December.
• Bitcoin daily transactions: averaged ~290,000, peaking ~490,000 in December (causing the famous fee crisis with $50+ transactions).
• Total crypto market cap year-end: ~$574 billion (from ~$17.7B at start of year — roughly 32x).
• Number of cryptocurrencies: ~1,335 (more than doubled from 2016).
• Coinbase verified users: ~13 million (up from ~5 million at start of 2017).
By year-end 2017, "Bitcoin" was the most-Googled financial term in the world. CNBC ran constant coverage. Mainstream celebrities (Floyd Mayweather, DJ Khaled, Paris Hilton) endorsed ICOs that would later face SEC enforcement. The bubble was unmistakable to anyone with historical perspective. The crash that followed would take 2+ years to recover from.
