What Comes Next: 2026–2030 Outlook

A grounded look at the next four years of crypto. The 5th Bitcoin halving, Ethereum's post-Fusaka roadmap, regulatory milestones (DAC8, GENIUS, MiCA), the institutional ETF floor, account abstraction, the quantum threat timeline, and the honest answer about what nobody knows.

Forecasting Without Pretending

The previous five lessons were history. This one is harder, because it is partly forecast. Where the timeline through May 2026 is documented (every event already happened, every price already printed), the years ahead are genuinely uncertain. Anyone who tells you precisely what Bitcoin will do in 2028 is either selling something or fooling themselves. What we can do is something more useful: separate the structural from the cyclical. Some shifts in the crypto landscape are already locked in by code and law. The 5th Bitcoin halving will happen — the protocol guarantees it. Ethereum's next several upgrades have been named (Glamsterdam, Hegota) and broadly scoped. DAC8 reporting starts in calendar year 2026 with a September 30, 2027 first-exchange deadline. The Mt. Gox trustee's extended deadline is October 31, 2026. MiCA grandfathering ends July 1, 2026. Polygon zkEVM sunsets July 1, 2026. NIST has finalized post-quantum standards (FIPS 203, 204, 205). These are not predictions — they are scheduled events. Other things are genuinely unknown: where Bitcoin's price prints in 2028; whether the halving cycle that has held for four iterations holds for a fifth; whether ETF flows smooth volatility or simply add a bigger institutional bid that magnifies it; whether quantum computing arrives in 2030 or 2040; whether the next four years bring a major hack, a major regulatory rollback, or a major technological breakthrough we have not anticipated. This lesson covers both. The structural changes are the spine; the cyclical questions are framed honestly as questions. By the end you should have a calendar of upcoming dates that matter, a vocabulary for the open questions, and a practical framework for sizing your own positions and time horizon. The intellectually honest answer about the future of crypto is "nobody knows" — but that does not mean nothing is knowable.

Key terms

5th Bitcoin halving (~April 2028)
Block 1,050,000. Block reward drops from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC. Daily issuance falls from ~450 BTC to ~225 BTC. Circulating supply will be ~19.95-19.97M BTC after.
Glamsterdam (2026)
Next planned Ethereum upgrade after Fusaka (Dec 2025). Continues The Surge agenda — additional L2 throughput, blob expansion, execution-layer optimizations.
Hegota (H2 2026)
Ethereum upgrade slated for second half of 2026. Targets state bloat and storage inefficiencies. Verkle Trees a leading candidate. Goal: reduce node storage burden up to 90%.
BIP-119 (OP_CTV)
CheckTemplateVerify proposal by Jeremy Rubin. Most mature Bitcoin covenant proposal. Last updated April 2026. Activation contested; no consensus yet.
BIP-345 (OP_VAULT)
James O'Beirne proposal. Adds OP_VAULT and OP_VAULT_RECOVER tapscript opcodes. Builds on CTV. Enables vault-style safety mechanisms with recovery paths.
DAC8
EU Directive on Administrative Cooperation #8. In force January 1, 2026. CASPs report EU-resident crypto transactions. First inter-state exchange deadline September 30, 2027.
IRS Form 1099-DA
New US crypto broker reporting form. Cost-basis reporting required from January 1, 2026. Transition relief through December 31, 2026 (IRS Notice 2026-20). Full enforcement 2027.
MiCA grandfathering deadline
July 1, 2026. Absolute EU-wide deadline for CASPs to obtain MiCA authorization (or have applied). Member-state grandfathering periods vary 5-18 months.
EU Digital Euro
ECB closed preparation phase October 2025. Pilot exercise mid-2027 (if regulation passes 2026). Potential first issuance 2029. Final issuance decision pending legislation.
NIST PQC standards
Finalized August 2024. FIPS 203 (ML-KEM, key encapsulation), FIPS 204 (ML-DSA, signatures), FIPS 205 (SLH-DSA, hash-based signatures). Required for post-quantum migration.
Ethereum post-quantum roadmap
Vitalik Buterin published February 2026. Targets BLS signatures, KZG data availability, ECDSA accounts, ZK proofs. Four-year Strawmap with ~7 hard forks every 6 months.
BIP-360 (Bitcoin PQC)
Bitcoin post-quantum proposal. Adds quantum-safe address types for voluntary migration. No coordinated funding; mainnet tooling targeted Q2 2026 by BTQ.
