Key terms
- Hot wallet
- A cryptocurrency wallet connected to the internet, offering convenience but higher security risk. Examples: MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Phantom, Coinbase Wallet.
- Cold wallet
- A wallet not connected to the internet, offering higher security. Hardware wallets and air-gapped computers are the main forms.
- Custodial wallet
- A wallet where a third party holds the private keys on your behalf. Convenient but exposes you to that third party's security and policies.
- Non-custodial wallet
- A wallet where you control the private keys directly. "Not your keys, not your coins."
- Hardware wallet
- A physical device that stores private keys offline and signs transactions internally. Ledger, Trezor, Coldcard, BitBox are leading brands.
- EOA (Externally Owned Account)
- A traditional Ethereum account controlled by a single private key. Most user wallets historically have been EOAs.
- Smart contract wallet
- A wallet controlled by smart contract code rather than a single key. Enables multisig, social recovery, transaction batching, spending limits. Safe holds $50-58B TVL.
- ERC-4337 (Account Abstraction)
- Ethereum standard live since March 1, 2023. Enables smart contract wallets without consensus changes. 26-40M+ smart accounts deployed.
- EIP-7702
- Part of Ethereum's Pectra upgrade (May 7, 2025). Lets ordinary EOAs temporarily delegate to smart contract code, bringing AA features to existing addresses.
- WalletConnect
- Open-source protocol bridging wallets and dApps via QR or deep link. 600+ wallets, 150+ chains, 70K+ apps. 221M+ connections in 2024.
- MetaMask
- The most widely used self-custody wallet. ~30M monthly active users in early 2025 (up 55% from Sept 2023). Browser extension and mobile.
- Safe (Gnosis Safe)
- The dominant smart contract multisig on Ethereum and EVM chains. ~$50-58B TVL early 2026; used by DAOs and corporate treasuries.
