AFX Just Launched Its Own Blockchain Built Specifically for Perpetual Trading — Here's What That Means

86d ago · 1 source

AFX has launched a sovereign Layer 1 blockchain designed specifically to optimize the execution environment for on-chain perpetual futures decentralized exchanges (DEXes). The project aims to solve performance bottlenecks that general-purpose blockchains face when handling high-frequency trading workloads. This represents a growing trend of application-specific blockchains tailored for particular DeFi use cases.

WHY IT MATTERS

Think of most blockchains like a general-purpose computer — they can do lots of things, but they're not specifically great at any one task. AFX is trying to build something more like a specialized gaming PC — a blockchain designed from the ground up to handle one specific job really well: perpetual futures trading. Perpetual futures (or 'perps') are a popular type of crypto trade where you can bet on whether an asset's price will go up or down without actually owning it, and the contract never expires. These trades need to happen extremely fast with precise execution, which is hard to do on blockchains that are also processing NFT sales, token swaps, and everything else. If AFX succeeds, it could mean faster and cheaper trading for users — but new blockchains face an uphill battle to attract enough users and money to become viable.
