Bitcoin Miner HIVE Just Landed a $350 Million AI Cloud Deal — Here's What That Means for the Mining Industry

11h ago · 1 source

HIVE Digital Technologies, a publicly traded Bitcoin mining company, has signed a five-year, $350 million contract to provide AI cloud computing services. The deal adds approximately $70 million in annualized revenue to the company's books, marking a significant pivot toward diversifying beyond cryptocurrency mining.

WHY IT MATTERS

Think of Bitcoin miners as companies that run giant warehouses full of powerful computers. Normally, those computers are used to process Bitcoin transactions and earn Bitcoin rewards. But it turns out that the same kind of setup — big buildings, lots of electricity, advanced cooling systems — is exactly what AI companies need to train and run their models. So HIVE is essentially renting out its computing power to AI customers instead of (or in addition to) mining Bitcoin. This is important because it gives the company a more stable income. Bitcoin mining revenue goes up and down with Bitcoin's price, but a five-year contract means predictable money coming in. It's like a farmer who normally only grows one crop deciding to also lease part of their land to a solar energy company — same land, extra income, less risk.
