Botanix Is Shutting Down Its Bitcoin Layer-2 Network — What That Says About the State of Bitcoin DeFi

62d ago · 1 source

Botanix, a Bitcoin Layer-2 network designed to bring DeFi capabilities to Bitcoin, has announced it will shut down in July 2026. The project cited insufficient demand for decentralized finance on Bitcoin as the primary reason for closing operations.

WHY IT MATTERS

Think of Bitcoin Layer-2 networks like add-on apps built on top of Bitcoin to give it new features — like lending, borrowing, and trading — that Bitcoin wasn't originally designed to do. Botanix was one of these add-on projects, but it's shutting down because not enough people actually wanted to use those features on Bitcoin. Most people who use DeFi (decentralized finance — basically banking without banks) tend to do it on other blockchains like Ethereum. This matters because it shows that just because Bitcoin is the biggest and most well-known cryptocurrency doesn't mean people automatically want to do everything on it. It's a reminder that in crypto, building cool technology isn't enough — people actually have to want to use it.
