Coinbase's Base Blockchain Went Down for 2 Hours — Here's What That Means for Layer 2 Reliability
47d ago · 1 source
Coinbase's Layer 2 blockchain, Base, experienced a roughly 2-hour outage before resuming block production. The network went offline, halting all transactions on the chain before being brought back online. The incident raises ongoing questions about the reliability and decentralization of Layer 2 networks.
WHY IT MATTERS
Think of a Layer 2 blockchain like an express lane on a highway — it processes transactions faster and cheaper than the main Ethereum road. Base is one of these express lanes, built by Coinbase, one of the biggest crypto companies in the world. When Base went down for 2 hours, it was like that express lane being completely closed — nobody could make transactions or use apps built on it. The bigger concern is that right now, most of these express lanes are controlled by a single operator (called a 'sequencer'), which means if that one operator has a problem, everything stops. On the main Ethereum network, thousands of independent participants keep things running, so a total shutdown is nearly impossible. This outage is a reminder that while Layer 2s offer speed and low costs, they often trade off some reliability and decentralization to get there.
