Fidelity Wants to Add Staking to Its Ethereum ETF — Here's What That Means for Your Crypto Investments

3h ago · 1 source

Fidelity has filed with the SEC to incorporate staking into its Ethereum ETF, which would allow the fund to earn yield by participating in Ethereum's proof-of-stake network. If approved, this would mark a significant milestone in bridging traditional finance products with core crypto-native features.

WHY IT MATTERS

Think of an Ethereum ETF like a basket that holds Ethereum on your behalf, so you can invest in ETH through a regular brokerage account — just like buying a stock. Now, 'staking' is like putting your Ethereum to work: you lock it up to help secure the Ethereum network, and in return, you earn rewards — similar to earning interest in a savings account. Right now, most Ethereum ETFs just hold ETH without staking it, meaning investors miss out on those extra rewards. Fidelity is asking the SEC (the government agency that oversees investments) for permission to stake the ETH inside its ETF. If approved, it means everyday investors could earn staking rewards without needing to understand the technical side of crypto — and it would make the ETF a more attractive investment overall.
