What do the different crypto order types do?

An order type is an instruction that tells an exchange the conditions under which to trade for you. A market order fills immediately at whatever price is available, a limit order fills only at a price you set or better, and the rest are combinations of the two with a trigger, a time limit or a size rule attached. Choosing the right one is mostly about deciding whether speed or price certainty matters more for that particular trade.

These pages explain each order type on its own terms, including what it does when the market gaps past your trigger and what happens if it only partly fills. Understanding them is also a defence, because an order type used carelessly is a common way to be filled at a price nobody intended.

Common questions

Does a stop-loss guarantee I exit at that price?

No. A stop-loss triggers a market order at your level, and in a fast move the next available price can be well below it. A stop-limit sets a floor on the fill price but may not fill at all if the market moves straight through.

What is a post-only order for?

It refuses to execute against an existing order, so it always adds to the book rather than taking from it. Traders use it to qualify for lower maker fees and to avoid accidentally crossing the spread.

What does OCO mean?

One-cancels-the-other links two orders so that when one executes, the other is withdrawn automatically. It is normally used to set a profit target and a protective exit at the same time without risking both filling.
