Tether Just Made $1.5 Billion in One Quarter — And US Government Debt Is the Reason
4h ago · 1 source
Tether reported $1.5 billion in profit for Q2 2026, driven largely by its massive holdings of US Treasury securities. The stablecoin issuer continues to generate enormous revenue by investing the reserves that back its USDT token, making it one of the most profitable companies in the crypto industry.
WHY IT MATTERS
Think of Tether like a giant digital bank that issues its own dollar-equivalent tokens called USDT. When you give Tether $1, they give you 1 USDT and then invest your dollar in safe government bonds (called Treasuries) that earn interest. The catch? Tether keeps all the interest and you get none — you just get the convenience of using USDT in the crypto world. Because so many people and exchanges use USDT (it's the most widely traded stablecoin), Tether is sitting on a mountain of Treasuries earning billions. This matters because Tether has become a critical piece of plumbing for the entire crypto market, and its financial health — or any problems with it — could ripple across the industry.
